  • Fortunately, MacOS (or on iOS, if you need help with that) has greatly improved the way you can quickly download, preview, and enable new fonts for popular Mac design apps. Here’s how to install.
  • Simply click the name of the font or the picture of the font to be taken to the Google Fonts page where you can download the fonts for free. If you aren’t sure how to download and install fonts for GIMP, I recommend checking out my GIMP Help Article on the subject for Windows users, or this article on How to Install Fonts for MAC users.

Once the font is in the correct folder, it should install automatically. If it doesn’t, double-click the font file to open the Font Previewer, and click the Install button in the upper-left corner. The next time you open Word, the new font should appear as an option in the font list. In the newly opened tab, click the 'download' icon to download the Roboto font. The font set will then be downloaded as a zip file. Extract the zip file you just downloaded into an arbitrary folder.Open that folder and you will see all the Roboto fonts inside. Download the matching font for free from Google Fonts to your computer. Navigate to the Google Fonts page using the link above. Once there, click on the 'Select this Font' button. This will open up a window overlay in the bottom right hand corner of your browser. This will open up a window overlay in the bottom.

To download all the files in the repository – totalling 1.3Gb and growing – you must use the “Mercurial” version control program.

Mercurial can download all the files, and then download only the changes, so that you don’t have to repeatedly download 1.3Gb+ of data that did not change.

  1. Download and install TortoiseHG, a graphical user interface for Mercurial.
  2. Make a new folder somewhere.
  3. Right click that folder, go to TortoiseHG, and click Clone

Working with Google Fonts on your Computer

Google has a great collection of web-fonts that can be used by webmasters on their websites. Ranging from scribbled fonts for your informal websites to professional typography fonts with good readability, Google has it. While these can be used on the web, what if you want it to be used for your prints? Until a couple of weeks back, Google Fonts were available for use as a web-font (WOFF file type). These web-fonts cannot be used on your computer, since your computer would require a True-Type Font (TTF file type). Google, now allows users to download the source fonts as a TTF file, meaning, you can use them on your computer, in iWork or Microsoft Office or virtually any application.

So how would you go about downloading them to your computer? Google lets you download from their code repository, but here are a rather couple of simple steps. You may follow either of them, but I would personally suggest the GitHub way – simple and quick.

SkyFonts App

Note: You’ll require a Fonts.com account (free) to work with the SkyFonts app!

Free

Google has partnered with Fonts.com to allow Google Fonts to be synced using its SkyFonts app delivered over its a patent-pending font delivery technology. To sync Google Fonts using SkyFonts, go ahead and download the SkyFonts app for your Mac or Windows. Throw it into your Application directory on your Mac, or install it on Windows.

When you open your application for the first time, you will have to authenticate yourself with your Fonts.com account (But if you don’t want to, you can choose the GitHub way). You can create one if you don’t have an account. Once you have logged in to your Fonts.com account, you can sync Google Fonts to your computer clicking on the SkyFonts button against a font name. If you prefer to download all fonts in one go, use GitHub.

Download via GitHub

Thanks to Andrew Wong, Google Fonts is available as a Git repo. Visit the googlefontdirectory repo and choose to download as a ZIP. This will download the entire repository to your computer as a ZIP file. Extract the ZIP and install the fonts just as you would with any other font.

Or clone on GitHub

If you prefer to sync instead, download the GitHub application for Mac or Windows, install it and choose ‘Clone in Mac/Windows‘ on the repository page. Your GitHub application will clone the repository on your computer and once done, install the fonts just you normally would.
